Dramatic video footage shows the moment a manhole cover explodes and narrowly misses a child and two adults who were walking past.

The incident happened in Warwick Road, Birmingham, yesterday (22 January) afternoon and left a one metre deep hole in the pavement.

A build-up of gas is believed to be the cause of the blast. Witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from a junction box near the manhole which had become dislodged.

A West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service spokesman told Sky News: “We were called to Warwick Road in Acocks Green, to what’s believed to have been a small explosion involving utilities.

“Two manhole covers became dislodged and a 1m-deep hole was left in the footpath. Fortunately and amazingly the family passing by weren’t hurt.

“Utility companies are investigating who owns the manholes concerned and the cause.”
