Video footage that shows officers from West Midlands Police pursuing a speeding driver through Birmingham has been released.

Yassir Ali has been jailed for dangerous driving after he drove a silver BMW 1 Series through red lights and on the wrong side of the road in February this year.

Traffic officers attempted to stop Ali but when he pulled over a passenger got out and attempted to obstruct the police car as he drove off at high speed.

Officers pursued the car as the 29-year-old narrowly missed oncoming traffic.

The BMW eventually came to a stop as Ali drove onto the pavement and got the car wedged between a bollard and the front of a shop.

Ali, of no fixed abode, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and taken into custody following the pursuit on 22 February.

Appearing at Birmingham Crown Court on 30 March he was sentenced to 14 months behind bars.

PC Neal Drew, from the central motorway policing group, said: “Ali’s actions that day were completely unacceptable and by driving the way he did he put innocent members of the public at risk.

“We take this kind of dangerous driving extremely seriously and that has been reflected in the lengthy sentence handed down by the courts.”
