The poles and cabinet maker Crown International has secured a £352,000 contract with Balfour Beatty and VINCI Construction Grands Projects to supply and install Variable Height Dual Unit Enabled PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) Masts, EAV poles and Radar masts, as part of the Smart Motorways project on the M6 between junctions 2-4.
This is the seventh contract awarded to smart city road and rail safety equipment manufacturer, Crown International, as Highways England rolls out its Smart Motorways scheme across the network.
Managing Director Mark Stacey said, “We are delighted to be working with Balfour Beatty Vinci again. Our highways business continues to go from strength to strength, and the success of projects such as the M3 and M5 are testament to our expertise and capabilities.
“We are continuously investing in road innovation and safety, meeting the need for secure, easily maintained installations in motorway locations. Our poles cable technology not only has a positive influence on roadside maintenance but most importantly, improves safety.”
Thirty-three PTZ 6 and 15 metre masts, 8 EAV poles and seventy Radar masts, will be installed along the M6 section over the next few months.
Each PTZ mast will be used to mount infrared equipment and lane monitoring cameras, and are designed for roadside maintenance by a single operative, thanks to its fully-integrated winch and braking system, reducing the need for costly lane closures and improving safety for maintenance workers. It also features, an integrated cable-management system ensuring cables remain in place when the platform is lowered or raised for maintenance, eliminating the need to disconnect wires or power supplies.
The Radar masts simply monitor the traffic flow and feed into the management system for the Smart motorway.
