The Institute of Highway Engineers has appointed Stephen Palmer as its Chief Executive.

Palmer is a long-standing member of the IHE, a former President of the Institute, Council member, and has been acting CEO for the past year.

He brings to the role extensive experience gained from work in the public sector most recently with Transport for London, and is an advisor on transport matters to Suffolk ACRE, a national charity specialising in provision of accessible transport in rural areas.

He is currently involved as a volunteer manager with the Mayoral Team London Ambassador programme at the forthcoming London Olympics & Paralympics.

Palmer said: “The IHE is going through big changes. Our main objective is to make the IHE the professional body of choice for highway engineers and we have seen a surge in membership over the last year or so.

“The Institute has recently undergone significant organisational change both in terms of governance and the delivery of member services. We now need to increase our involvement with other organisations, with local and national government, and with the media.”

IHE President, Richard Hayes says: “Stephen has clearly demonstrated his knowledge and experience of the workings of a professional body.

“He will now be promoting the Institute and developing effective relationships with Government, the media, the public and industry partner organisations.”
