One of the most connected people in the North American ITS industry, Scott Belcher, will write a column in forthcoming issues of SMART Highways magazine.

Belcher spent seven years as President and CEO of Washington DC-based ITS America and is widely credited with turning around the organisation and attracting a wider range of members.  He is now an independent consultant assisting a range of companies on strategic, technical and business development initiatives.

His involvement in SMART Highways follows his appearance at Traffex where he spoke and moderated in several sessions and added a unique insight to round table discussions.  He was featured in the Big Interview in the first issue of this year.

“I’m looking forward to writing about my thoughts and experiences in SMART Highways,” Belcher said. “I will try to cut through some of the hype around our industry and give some realistic analysis of where we are and what we can achieve.

“For example, recent work with a client and conversations at ITS America’s Annual Meeting  confirmed that achieving Mobility as a Service is really hard.  There is a sharp divide between the rhetoric of the salespeople and challenges facing those actually deploying the systems, such as common payment systems, major provider participation, application operations and data availability and management.  This is the sort of issue I look forward to discussing in my column.”

Belcher’s wide range of expertise also includes AI, Blockchain, CAV and road user charging.

“Scott’s commitment to SMART Highways is a major moment for our magazine,” said editor Paul Hutton. “Having someone so well respected join our line-up underlines that our strategy to move the title to serve an international audience is working, with people of Scott’s calibre seeing the benefit of being involved.”

Scott Belcher’s first column will go to print in early September.
