Ford and Volkswagen, are planning announce a far-reaching alliance early in the new year, in an attempt to cope with the new technology challenges that are facing the auto industry.

American news channel CNBC is reporting that the deal will “serve as something of a jointly played jigsaw puzzle”, allowing Ford and VW to launch a cooperative effort to bring electrified and autonomous vehicles to market, building on each company’s billion-dollar investment.

“We are in quite advanced negotiations and dialogue with Ford to really build up a global automotive alliance, which also would strengthen the American automotive industry,” it’s quoting Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess as saying after meeting President Donald Trump in Washington DC, “offering” the report said, “the most substantial comment on the carmakers’ negotiations yet”.

CNBC says the meeting, which included other European auto executives such as Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, was aimed at easing trade tensions that have seen Mr Trump threaten to impose major new tariffs aimed at restricting access to the American market by European automakers.
