Capita Symonds’ Innovations team has secured a £668,000 extension to its £7m Highways Agency Traffic Information System (Hatris) contract which will take the project through to the end of March 2012.

The Hatris system is used to monitor and report on vehicle journey times across set routes on the motorway and trunk road network. This enables the Highways Agency and Department for Transport to identify trends and measure benefits from new schemes.

The system accumulates traffic data from a variety of sources including National Traffic Control Centre and Trafficmaster cameras.

Through the development of complex algorithms in conjunction with the Transport Research Laboratory, the data is processed on a monthly basis to produce the journey time reliability measures across the Highways Agency network. In addition a Journey Time Database is produced and distributed to the Highways Agency, Department for Transport and key contractors.

Andy Wall, Director, Capita Symonds’ Innovations team, said: “The Innovations team have developed an excellent relationship with the HA and will work closely with the project team to further enhance and add value to the system over the next year.

“This extension is the result of hard work and excellence from the staff to ensure that Hatris continues to be the HA’s key source of Journey Time data even when systems developed by competitors which were destined to replace Hatris have been decommissioned.”
