British ITS expert Matthew Cole is the new President of American firm Cubic Transportation Systems.

He’s spending the week at the ITS World Congress in Bordeaux where he caught up with Smart Highways Editor Paul Hutton.

In our interview, which you can hear in full below, he explains how he came from an accountancy background in the business in Britain, via Australia to the company’s headquarters in San Diego, California.

And he said that he plans to use the expertise that the company has in Britain around the world: “We invested in the ITMS business that we acquired from Serco a couple of years ago and I think a big part of our growth plans will be exporting that capability particularly into the United States but elsewhere in our footprint as well”.

He says Britain is a major part of the company: “The UK’s the biggest part of our business, despite being a San Diego-headquartered company.  More than half our employees are in the UK, on the transportation side of Cubic that is, and by revenue it’s about a third of the business.  I think my background coming from the UK, having spent time in Australia and now living in the States, hopefully I am a pretty good representation of the workforce, generally speaking.”
