It’s emerged more than one million vehicles with foreign number plates have failed to pay for the Dartford Crossing charge since the new toll system was implemented nearly three years ago.

The website Kent Live reports that a total of 1,137,643 vehicles with foreign plates have used the crossing and failed to pay the toll between November 30, 2014 and May 31, 2017.

The freeflow charging system was introduced in November 2014, replacing the cash toll booths, with fines promised for those who don’t have an account or don’t pay by midnight the following day.

Two years ago it was disclosed that nearly 200,000 penalty charge notices had been passed onto the European Debt Recovery Agency in the first seven months of the new operation.
